Weekly FX Update

31 August 2026

The AUD is stronger — but this week has plenty of ways to test it

The Australian dollar begins the week in a stronger position, with the latest official RBA reference rate showing AUD/USD at 0.7196.

That is a clear improvement from the 0.69–0.71 range that dominated much of July and August. The move reflects a softer US dollar backdrop through parts of August, stronger commodity-linked sentiment and a firmer Australian cross-rate profile.

However, this week is a major test. Australia releases Q2 GDP on Wednesday, followed by July international trade data on Thursday. In the United States, markets face the full labour-market sequence: JOLTS, ADP employment, jobless claims and, most importantly, Friday night’s non-farm payrolls report.

Oil is also back in the headlines after a US strike on Iran’s Larak Island pushed Brent above US$90/bbl and WTI above US$85/bbl. Higher oil can support commodity sentiment, but in the current environment it also revives inflation concerns and can support the US dollar if markets price a more hawkish Fed.

What Is Driving the Australian Dollar?

  1. AUD/USD is now testing the 0.72 area
The AUD’s move to 0.7196 is technically and psychologically important. It shows the currency has extended beyond the earlier 0.70–0.71 range. The key question this week is whether the move is supported by domestic growth data or whether stronger US labour data pulls the pair back.
  2. Australian Q2 GDP is the key domestic event
Wednesday’s National Accounts release will be the main Australian macro event. A stronger GDP result would support the view that the economy remains resilient despite restrictive policy settings. A weak result would make the AUD more dependent on offshore support.
  3. Australian trade data matters for the commodity story
Thursday’s July international trade release will be watched for export momentum, particularly given the AUD’s sensitivity to China demand and commodity prices. A stronger trade result would reinforce the AUD’s commodity-linked support.
  4. US jobs data is the week’s main global driver
The US labour calendar is heavy, but Friday’s non-farm payrolls report is the decisive event. After a hawkish Jackson Hole message from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, a strong payrolls result would support further rate-hike expectations and could lift the USD. A softer jobs number would give the AUD more room to hold near 0.72.
  5. Oil is again the geopolitical wildcard
Brent and WTI jumped after the reported US strike on Iran’s Larak Island. If oil continues higher, markets may price renewed inflation risk, which could support the USD even if commodity sentiment helps the AUD on some crosses.
  6. China remains important, but secondary this week
China PMI and trade indicators remain relevant for the AUD, but this week’s dominant drivers are likely to be Australian GDP and US labour-market data.

AUD Outlook

The AUD starts the week with a constructive bias after moving close to 0.72 against the USD. The currency has support from stronger commodity-linked sentiment and a firmer trade-weighted profile, but event risk is significant.

The most supportive outcome for the AUD would be solid Australian GDP, stable trade data, softer US payrolls and contained oil prices. That combination would reduce USD support and help AUD/USD hold the recent move.

The less favourable outcome would be weak Australian GDP, a strong US payrolls print, rising wages and another leg higher in oil. That would likely revive USD demand and could pull AUD/USD back toward the 0.71 area.

For businesses with upcoming USD payments, the main event-risk windows are Wednesday morning, Thursday morning, and Friday night Sydney time. For EUR, GBP, NZD and JPY exposures, broader USD direction and risk sentiment will remain the main drivers.

Quick Take

AUD-positive scenario: Australian GDP is resilient, trade data holds up, US jobs soften, and oil stabilises.

AUD-negative scenario: Australian GDP disappoints, US payrolls/wages remain firm, oil rises further, and the Fed-hike narrative strengthens.

This week’s reminder: The AUD has climbed near 0.72. Now it just needs GDP, payrolls and oil headlines to behave — which is a bit like asking a cat to respect office hours.
